This week, I decided to start experimenting with biochar. First off, let me explain biochar. It is basically just charcoal used in gardening and other agricultural applications. We will be using it under the quail to help with the smell and later with chickens when we get them. We will also put it in the compost. This will allow bacteria and nutrients to “stick” to the biochar. Then, we will use it in the garden where it will add life and structure to the soil. The reason this is an experiment is that we are not making it in a pit, commercial production maker, or a metal barrel. Those are the most common ways people make it. I don’t have room for a pit and don’t want to spend money on the other stuff. But I do have an old metal trash can we use to keep quail food in before we bought plastic barrels.
