Last weekend a group of volunteers, including myself, worked towards re-planting some native plants a Camp Chief Little Turtle, a Scout camp in Indiana. Another previous group cut down a lot of invasive trees, including the dreadful honeysuckle.
I don’t believed that we can ever have entirely native ecosystems because that genie left the bottle many years ago. But what we can do is remove plants that are causing problems and encourage plants that serve both us and nature.
Sarah and I have started this in our back yard. We want mostly native grassland plants to support native pollinators. This is both good for the environment and good for our garden. We will also be planting non-natives, like field peas. They will help add nitrogen to our sandy soil, that desperately needs it, and also help feed the chickens and quail.
